With all the latest high tech workout machines hitting the market does anyone ever think about the workout mat? Let’s face it; exercise mats are not high on the list of the “wow” factor. Yet this simple, understated piece of workout equipment shouldn’t be thought of as M.I.A. Quality exercise mats used in Pilates exercises as well as in a yoga practice are very important in providing you comfort and stability. Pilates mat workouts consist of a lot rolling exercises and a quality mat helps protect the spine. If you own hard wood floors a Pilates mat because of its thickness will make your workout even more comfortable. And if you have ever experienced an achy hip, having an extra thick mat doesn’t hurt the situation.

Yoga mats are constructed differently than the Pilates mat. Yoga mats have a stickiness factor. They are also thin and because of this the yoga practitioner feels more secure and balance when faced with the yoga exercises they are performing. Regardless if you love Pilates or yoga it is best to own your own mat for hygiene reason. Do you really want to workout in someone else’s sweat? All mats have different price points, thickness, length and width. A mat is an investment so choose wisely.
